Consumer
Challenge
A
In today’s world we have been asked to reduce
the volume of “rubbish” being dumped in
our landfills and encourage recycling. With an aging
population many do not have the strength to crush
the plastic drink bottles, cans, etc. before placing
them in the recycling crate.
In conjunction with local councils and
regional councils a challenge has been given to students
to design a portable home compactor that will be capable
of crushing plastic bottles, tins, cans, recyclable
confectionary containers, etc.
This ergonomically designed product
must meet a wide range of physical abilities of the
user.
Challenge B
Design a portable, reusable and recyclable drink bottle
for the latest product launch by that famous New Zealand
company Charlies. It has to be trendy, light weight
and instantly recognised as a Charlies product.
This section is supported by Plastics
New Zealand.
Electronics
Your Client is a contract supplier for the Discovery
Channel and has given you with the following challenge.
To design a remotely controlled device
which will venture towards/into volcanoes which are
expected to erupt in the not too distant future! The
machine will document and take footage for a prestigious
nature television program. Action packed footage is
worth more to the television program channel and will
attract greater viewing numbers and revenue.
You will need to research common volcanic
scenarios and limit the scope of the project by specifying
realistic needs and wants that need to be achieved.
The end result should consider realistic limitations
such as; communications method, battery capacity,
weight, size, footage quality, robust design, manoeuvrability,
user-interface, servicing, cost, etc.
Remember you will be marked on your
demonstration of the design process and the real world
feasibility of your final design according to the
published marking schedule.
