Alpine Tourism Centre

This proposed development is to be constructed on an 8 hectare block of native forest in the Arthur’s Pass National Park (see site plan).Environmental conditions require minimal disruption of the natural forest.

The Alpine Tourist Centre is to be located on an existing cleared area adjacent to the main highway. Some additional clearing of existing native forest would be required for the main vehicle access from the main highway and perhaps a small area of new clearing to conceal the main car park (for approx.20 cars and 6 buses)into the forest area.

The cabin accommodation would be set into the existing forest area with path access only from the parking area. Some new planting will be needed to provide shelter.

A bird/wildlife enclosure is to be located approximately 100m away from the main central building. This area covers approximately 2 hectares and would be fully fenced with a netted roof.

The Tourist Centre would contain a reception/ticketing area, souvenir sales and display, an audio-visual presentation area to seat 30 people, café and toilets/rest room (total floor area of approx.300m2). An adjacent manager’s accommodation would be a three bedroom home (approx.130m2) plus double garage.

The 8 tourist cabins would be self contained double bedroom with living/kitchenette and bathroom (approx.45m2).

Commercial Architecture

You are to design the Tourist Centre to contain the spaces and functions of the sketch above. Note the comments stated for the Domestic Architecture brief relating to the location and use of materials.

Domestic Architecture (choose one option)

Either

The client is the Conservation Department. It will lease the whole development to a private company. For this reason we do not know precisely the details of the manager and family. The brief is to design a home for a married couple who will both manage and run the centre. It is unlikely there will be children living permanently in the house but it must nevertheless be a three bedroomed home with kitchen/dining area, bathroom and WC plus other typical facilities. A double garage and workshop is to have internal access to the house.

Consider very carefully the implications of the high winds, rainfall and snowfall when developing your design for these buildings, particularly access.

All exterior materials must be in keeping with the natural environment.

Or

Provide an overall layout for the 8 tourist cabins, including details for a typical cabin (double bedroom, living/kitchenette, bathroom of approximately 45m2 )

Interior Design

From your own design (or adapted from the diagram on the previous page) you are required to provide a detailed interior design for the information/reception/ticketing, souvenir display and sales as well as the Café. Your drawings must provide a workable plan, interior elevations and perspective.

You are encouraged to consider recycled, recovered materials, use of plastics in these areas.

Note that these do not need to be large areas (approximately 150m2 in total). You need not show any details of the A/V room or toilets/ rest room but your plan should show the relationship to these spaces.

Junior

Year 9, 10 and 11 students may choose from any of the above sections.

Judging Criteria

Where appropriate judging will cover:
• siting and location – building’s position in relation to sun, prevailing wind and other environmental factors.
• planning of the interior spaces and spatial relationships.
• accurate interpretation and satisfaction of the design brief.
• presentation.
• materials and finishes.
• creativity, visual innovation, originality, design impact.

Category Criteria

Comply with all Conditions of Entry and Presentation Criteria.
Include siting and location.
Include at least one sheet of the completed elevations and floor plan.
Clearly show planning and room / space relationship and ergonomic considerations.
Take into account any environmental issues.
Supply a written report including an evaluation of the design outcome.
The use of CAD and graphics software is permitted.
Include a fully illustrated perspective drawing of the complete design.
